On Summer peaches

Walking on the beaches lookin’ at the peaches
— The Stranglers

For me, peach is the fruit of the Summer. Ok, the melon and the fig could also qualify, but for different reasons. The peach is the heart of the Summer: is that fruit you eat raw, skin and all, with joy over the sink so your clothes don’t get full of sticky juice.

Many moons ago I went to the Algarve with a couple of friends and we run out of money after a week, as teenagers do: money is short and money management skills are still very incipient. But we were enjoying it so much that we didn’t want to leave. So we lived on the generosity of strangers and on the fruit we picked where we could find it. And the peach was my dessert after a main course of tomato. That experience taught me to appreciate good, ripe, seasonal fruit.

It is great for any time of the day, fresh, in a smoothie, as juice, or even baked in a pie. For a great take on cooked peaches, see Luís Neves article on Pêssegos à Minhota.
